Last weekend the 5th IOC World Conference on Prevention of Injury & Illness in sport took place in Monaco. The HITG team was represented by Professor Jiří Dvořák, Dr Evert Verhagen and Annika Prien.

Birgit PrinzIt is the third time that the conference takes place in Monaco. The main topic of the conference is how to improve injury prevention and health in athletes. International experts and scientists from over 20 countries discussed this question and related topics in various presentations, workshops and open debates. Especially HITG member Dr Evert Verhagen, who was involved in more than 15 presentations and workshops, contributed enormously to increase awareness for the importance of prevention in sport. One of his talks dealt with the question, whether athletes’ performance can be optimised through prevention and continuous health monitoring. Contrary to popular belief, Verhagen advocates that prevention may indeed further not only health, but also level of performance.

If you are interested in further information regarding the studies presented at the conference, you can find all abstracts in a special edition of the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

The goal of the Head in the Game project is to evaluate and improve long-term health in elite men's and women's football. The main question we seek to answer is: does a professional football career have any consequences for the musculoskeletal or neurocognitive health of former players?
